Wolverhampton Arts and Museum Service has a particularly strong collection on the theme of the conflict in Ulster and has led the way in addressing the political situation in Ireland. From the 1980s the service began to actively collect works on the theme of conflict in Ulster and have since created the only collection of its kind in England. The collection policy of the Northern Ireland works was bold and began at a time when other museums, even national museums were reluctant to approach the contentious issues raised by ‘the troubles.’ The collection includes work by Jock McFadyen, Willie Doherty, Paul Graham, Anthony Davies, John Kindness and John Keane.
In 1994 Wolverhampton Art Gallery curated a ground-breaking exhibition to coincide with the IRA ceasefire of that time. The large scale exhibition was mounted at short notice and focused on artists that had produced work referring to the conflict.
