Wolverhampton is in the West Midlands, right in the heart of England.  With a population of just under 240,000 the town became a city in 2000.
 
It has had a gallery in the centre of the city since 1884 and is also home to Wolverhampton Wanderers FC with its distinctive gold and black Molineux ground. The city offers visitors many other attractions and places to visit including theatre, sport and shopping facilities.
 
Wolverhampton is a multi-cultural city and has a higher than national average population of Asian and Asian British as well as Black and Black British, these citizens contribute greatly to the city’s cosmopolitan and vibrant feel.
 
The city has also been identified as an area of economic and cultural deprivation and has higher unemployment than the national average. However the Council are heading a number of major regeneration projects throughout the city and there are also national initiatives to try and resolve this situation.

The arts and museum service in Wolverhampton has expanded and there are now three very different but all excellent places to visit. There is the art gallery, right in the centre of town, where there are always interesting and at times challenging exhibitions. The stunning Edwardian Bantock House with its museum about Wolverhampton’s industry, nestled within the grounds of Bantock Park is just a mile from the city centre.  The newly re-furbished Bilston Craft Gallery, the largest dedicated craft venue in the region hosting a lively programme of temporary exhibitions featuring contemporary craft is in the centre of Bilston, just a five minute bus or tram ride from the city centre.
